Lee Poulis has performed in theaters internationally including with Berlin’s Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Madrid’s Teatro Real, Opera Bilbao, Teatro Municipal de Santiago Chile, Washington National Opera, and Los Angeles Opera. He performed as Oppenheimer in three national premieres of John Adams’ Doctor Atomic with Staatstheater Saarbrücken in Germany, the Finnish National Opera, and Teatro de La Maestranza in Seville, Spain.
Lee made his return to Opera Santa Barbara in the title role of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin just before covid, the same company where he sang his first Ford in Falstaff. In previous seasons Lee covered Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor at San Francisco Opera, and covered Eisenstein in Lyric Opera of Chicago’s production of Die Fledermaus.
His frequently performed roles include the title role in Don Giovanni, Valentin in Faust, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Escamillo in Carmen, Zurga in Les Pêcheurs de Perles, and Marcello in La Boheme. Additional theaters that Lee has performed with include Fort Worth Opera, Minnesota Opera, Sarasota Opera, Lyric Opera Baltimore, Staatstheater Braunschweig, Theater Chemnitz, Oper Halle, and Deutsche Oper am Rhein.
As an ensemble member of Theater Bonn in Germany for three seasons, Lee sang Wolfram in a new production of Tannhäuser in addition to performing such roles as Germont in La Traviata, the Father in Hansel und Gretel, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Michonnet in Adriana LeCouvreur, Renato in Un Ballo in Maschera, Belcore in L’Elisir d’Amore, and Yeletsky in Pique Dame.
On the concert stage, Lee has performed as soloist in Rachmaninoff’s The Bells with the Florida Orchestra, Hindemith’s When lilac’s last in the dooryard bloom’d with the NY Choral Society at Carnegie Hall, Beethoven’s 9th with the Eugene Symphony, and Eissler’s Deutsch Sinfonie with the Beethoven Orchester Bonn. Lee has also sung frequently as soloist in orchestral performances of works including Carmina Burana, Handel’s Messiah, Faure’s Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem, Bach’s B Minor Mass, and Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem.
Lee is first prize winner of the Liederkranz Foundation Vocal Competition, the Francisco Viñas International Voice Competition, the Chester Ludgin International Verdi Baritone Competition, and prize winner of the Palm Beach Opera Vocal Competition and the George London Foundation Vocal Competition. Lee is originally from Huntington, New York and is an alumnus of Harvard University, the Music Academy of the West, Washington National Opera’s Cafritz Young Artist Program, and San Francisco Opera’s Merola Opera Program.
